Toxic exposures from medications and prescription drugs

A casual survey of recent magazine, newspaper, television, and radio advertising illustrates the various negative impacts caused by our altered and nutrient-deficient food supply, in addition to a variety of environmental and industrial toxic exposures. Let's take a look at a few of the most prevalent degenerative dis-ease conditions and the pharmaceutical agents recommended to address them.

Condition

High blood sugar
Heartburn, acid indigestion
Teen asthma
Migraine headaches
Social anxiety, mild depression
IBS-IBD
Recommended drug

Glucovance
Zantac, Nexium
Flovent
Imitrex
Paxil, Zoloft
Zelnorm*

What are the major symptoms associated with these conditions?

Various symptoms experienced by people who have one or more of the dis-ease conditions mentioned above include: sleep disturbances, inattention, fatigue, jittery nerves, muscle tension without prior physical activity or strain, nausea, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, severe headache pain, lower back pain, abdominal pain, wheezing, shortness of breath, bad breath, upset stomach, diarrhea, excessive thirst, dry mouth, weight gain, skin rashes (partial list only)

What are the major adverse side effects associated with these drugs?

Following are just some of the scientifically documented and publicly advertised adverse side effects associated with the eight pharmaceutical agents listed above: dehydration, lightheadedness, dizziness, shakiness, diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach, headaches, upper respiratory infections, nasal congestion, sore throat, sinusitis, influenza, joint pain, skin rash, dermatitis, tightness in the chest, tightness in the throat, difficulty breathing, sudden abdominal pain, drowsiness, nervousness, insomnia.

We encourage you to locate similar ads yourself and read the comprehensive list of side effects. The drugs mentioned above are advertised full-page in some of the most widely circulated magazines. The list of adverse side effects appears in very small print, usually on the opposite page of the advertisement.

If you see a correlation between the list of adverse side effects and the list of dis-ease symptoms that the various drugs claim to alleviate, you have gotten one of the points of this little exercise...all drugs are toxic! Many of the adverse side effects of the drugs are similar to and even worse than the symptoms they claim to alleviate in the first place.

* Zelnorm was taken off the market by the FDA in the Spring of 2007 for an increased incidence of reported adverse side effects including liver damage and heart attacks.

Getting to the heart of the matter

In another multi-page advertisement, a variety of over-the-counter painkillers and arthritis medications were questioned. Following is the list of most commonly experienced adverse side effects associated with the medications under scrutiny:

Headaches, stomach aches, diarrhea, constipation, drowsiness, sore throat, liver problems, influenza, dizziness, ulcers, ringing in the ears, nervousness, confusion, kidney and bladder problems, swelling of the hands and feet, sensitivity to sunlight, abdominal cramps, muscle cramps in legs, nausea, skin rashes, hives, hypertension, stiffness in joints, colds, weight gain.

It was stated matter-of-factly that "over 10,000 people die each year and hundreds of thousands are hospitalized due to adverse negative reactions to these drugs." Following is the list of these drugs. Keep in mind that the following are drugs targeted for the relief of general physical body pain and specifically arthritis pain. These drugs are all over-the-counter and do not need a doctor's prescription.

Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Bufferin, Indocin, Azolid, Nafon, Tolectin, Meclomen, Mono-Gesic, Trilisate, Fenoprofen, Meclofenanate, Moril, Datril, Nuprin, Liquipen, Butazolidin, Oxalid, Clinoril, Disalcid, Ecotrin, Solindac, Piroxicam, Naproxen, Tylenol, Advil, Excedrin, Midol, Orudis, Tandearil, Rufen, Naprosyn, Feldene, Dolobid, Magan...just to name a few.

The point is a simple one...nothing is neutral. When it comes to the various impacts on the human body, all substances are either nutritional, complementary, and biomodulating, or they are insulting, destabilizing, and toxic. The negative and toxic impacts of over-the-counter and prescribed medications and drugs are easily overlooked and often misunderstood.

For example, when the body is not working perfectly well, toxic substances exert an immediate or acute adverse effect as well as residual, chronic, and long-term negative side effects. In other words, in an imperfectly functioning human body, certain drugs leave behind toxic residues that continue to exert their adverse effects, for days, weeks, months...sometimes for years.

The point is that weak cells, tissues, organs, and systems store toxins and continue to be adversely affected by them. Healthy cells, tissues, organs, and systems identify, neutralize, and eliminate toxins on a regular and continual basis. Our health depends on this process and our health is a result of this process.

Toxic substances must be digested, absorbed, and assimilated as if they were nutrients at first. Then our normal internal cleansing and detoxification systems are triggered. These include the biological mechanisms of identification, neutralization, and elimination. This natural defense mechanism works completely only under ideal conditions. Under less than ideal conditions, toxic substances are only partially neutralized and partially eliminated and will temporarily or permanently find housing in fat cells and many other places.

This means that the adverse side effects of a variety of toxic substances can be experienced over and over by the same individual until the toxic substance is neutralized and eliminated from the body.

The following three things are crucial to whether or not an individual is successful in neutralizing and eliminating toxic substances from the body:

  • the quality of the person's diet and lifestyle
  • the degree and duration of any toxic exposures
  • the effectiveness of the person's own internal cleansing and detoxification systems

Is there a connection between existing toxic substances in the body and the decision to improve one's health through better nutrition?

Absolutely. Anytime we activate the internal process called homeostasis (balance and harmony), we activate the detoxification and cleansing systems in our body. This is a vital and necessary step in our journey to better health. The challenge is that it is very misunderstood and therefore not always consistently applied and utilized.

If your conscious and proactive plan is to improve your health through better nutritional choices, be aware of the miracle of your body. The various toxic insults of your past are lining up to be identified, neutralized, transformed, and eliminated from your body and from your life. This is a good thing!

If this normal, necessary, and essential process proceeds too quickly and/or without your conscious, willful participation, it can be an uncomfortable and confusing experience. Remember, our period of adjustment conversation from chapter one? That's all this is, your body adjusting to new and better nutritional input. This information is easily misunderstood but is vital to your success and for optimum health and well-being.

It is very important to understand that biomodulating substances, although extremely helpful in assisting our bodies to identify, neutralize, and eliminate all forms of toxic substances, do not in and of themselves cause or produce these various adverse side effects. Proper nutrition is simply the catalyst to remove the harmful build-up from our bodies.

Toxic substances cause adverse and negative side effects; food grade and nutritionally biomodulating substances cause the body to function normally. This normal nutritional response, depending upon the circumstances and condition of the individual in question, may initiate an unexpected detoxification and cleansing of previously ingested toxins.

This is a major and most significant difference between foods and drugs, medications and nutrition. This distinction may seem subtle, but it's critical. What may look like an allergic or toxic reaction could very well be your normal, vital, and essential, detoxification and cleansing pathways being re-activated. This is actually a sign of health. However, if the level of discomfort is acute or extreme, it is advisable to dramatically slow down or stop completely whatever you may have done to bring about such a reaction in your body. And, if you are so inclined, seek out the health/medical advisor of your choice for further explanation and support.

When you begin your Journey to Better Nutrition and you find yourself experiencing any of the previously mentioned side effects, please consider all the possible sources for these very specific negative reactions, including all previous toxic exposures and all previous pharmaceutical and medical experiences.

This information is being offered as an educational and information service only. This information shared about adverse side effects of various medications and over-the-counter drugs is readily available to us all. Because of the fine print, sometimes in awkward locations, many of us have never read it or just never fully understood or comprehended the practical consequences. We encourage you to sit down with your doctor and have an open and frank conversation on the subject of medications and their various negative reactions within the human body.

Please take the opportunity to look up the side effects of any drugs you have taken, especially those taken during the past few years. Please also examine the possibility of any other toxic exposures in your past. We also recommend that, before taking another medication, you review all the information available to you about it, especially the information about potential adverse side effects.

Remember...

Weak cells, tissues, organs, and systems retain toxins and continue to be adversely affected by them. This means that we can experience and re-experience a variety of adverse side effects until the toxic substances in question have been completely eliminated from our body. Healthy cells, tissues, organs, and systems identify, neutralize, and eliminate toxic substances on a regular and continual basis.

The key steps to restoring, maintaining, and increasing our health and well-being are these:

  1. Avoid or minimize all present and future toxic exposures.
  2. Neutralize and eliminate all accumulated toxic substances in your body from all previous exposures.
  3. Identify, modify, and transform all the most damaging habits in your current diet and lifestyle. Proactive nutrition is not about denial or deprivation, it's about the active cultivation of the things that nourish us best.
  4. Identify, understand, and practice consistently the complementary habits that truly nourish you best.
